Sony"s new 15.5-inch VAIO E Series promises style, performance, and multimedia prowess at recession-conscious prices. Though our $919 configuration is a bit steep, this machine provides more than ample performance to serve as an all-purpose family PC that surfs the Web, plays Blu-ray movies và games, & looks great in your den, kitchen, or living room. However, short battery life and tinny speakers hold this system back.
Design
If you want a notebook with a conservative look that will fade into the wallpaper, don"t buy the VAIO E Series. However, if you desire a colorful, exciting kiến thiết that really turns heads, the VAIO E is for you. However, it"s not made for road warriors. At 14.6 x 9.8 x 1.2 inches thick và 6.0 pounds, the VAIO E is more at home on your desk than on your lap or your airline tray table.
The notebook is available in the relatively conservative Coconut White, Gunmental Black, and Black Sand or the louder Hibiscus Pink, Caribbean Green and Iridiscent xanh (metallic teal). The shiny lid & deck feature gradient patterns, while the bezel, sides, và bottom all have a metallic hue. Our reviews unit"s Iridescent xanh color, combined with the green status lights and hot pink writing on the Assist button, reminded us of the television show Miami Vice.
The 103-key island-style keyboard includes a numeric keypad và plenty of room for your hands. The keys offer an acceptable but unimpressive cấp độ of tactile feedback, with no noticeable flex. Using the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor test, we were able khổng lồ achieve a strong score of 86 words per minute with a 1-percent error rate, better than our typical rate of 80 words per minute.
Rather than sitting in the middle of the deck, the VAIO E"s touchpad is positioned left of center và directly beneath the space bar. This positioning takes some getting used to, as does the high-friction surface on the pad. In our testing, we found navigating around the desktop to lớn be a little jerky because of the rough pad. We were also disappointed lớn find that the touchpad does not appear tosupport multitouch gestures. The two discrete mouse buttons offered just the right amount of feedback.
Heat

Throughout our use of the VAIO E Series, we found that the major touchpoints stayed within comfortable temperatures. After playing a Hulu đoạn clip at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured the keyboard at an acceptable 95 degrees Fahrenheit, the touchpad at a reasonable 94 degrees, & the bottom at a somewhat warm 101 degrees. However, given the kích thước of the notebook, you probably won"t be putting it on your lap much.
Display và Sound
The VAIO E"s 15.5-inch 1366 x 768 screen provided sharp images and bright colors. However, the glossy surface on the screen ensured that colors looked washed out at any but the most direct viewing angle and, even when sitting right in front of the computer, we had lớn push the lid back 30 degrees khổng lồ avoid seeing overhead lights or our own reflection.
Every kind of video clip we played was incredibly sharp, detailed and smooth, from a streaming 720p episode of Fringe to a downloaded 1080p file from Microsoft"s WMV HD nội dung Showcase lớn a DVD of the movie Dark City. When we tried playing a Blu-ray disc of Iron Man, images were crisp & colorful, but the soundtrack seemed muted, even at maximum volume.
The speakers are a definite weakness. We tried listening to lớn a heavy metal song, a jazz tune, and an R&B track, and all sounded tinny and harsh. Though the notebook"s speakers got fairly loud as we streamed tunes from Napster.com, the VAIO sounded more lượt thích a mono clock radio than an expensive multimedia machine with stereo speakers.
Ports and Webcam
The VAIO E comes with just about every port the average consumer could need. On the right side of the chassis are three USB 2.0 ports, an optical drive, & a Kensington lock slot. On the left side, you"ll find Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, e
SATA/USB, & Express
Card/34 slots. The front lip has headphone & microphone ports and two different memory card readers: one for Sony Memory Stick Pro cards & another for standard SD Cards.

The VAIO E"s 2.13-GHz Intel chip core i3-330M CPU và ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics combined to lớn give it very strong overall performance. Whether surfing the Web, viewing high def videos, playing games, or circling the globe in Google Earth, the notebook felt extremely snappy, & our benchmark tests only confirmed that impression.
On PC Mark Vantage, a thử nghiệm that measures overall performance, the VAIO E scored a whopping 5,449, well above the mainstream notebook category average of 3,587 and the 4,918 returned by the core i3-powered Toshiba Satellite L505. The 7,200-rpm, 500GB hard drive booted Windows 7 home Premium(64-bit) in 56 seconds, which is just a tad faster than the category average of59 seconds và 5 seconds better than the Satellite L505.
The hard drive took 2 minutes và 55 seconds to complete the máy vi tính Transfer Test, in which we copy 4.97GB of mixed truyền thông media files. That"s a rate of 21.7 MBps, which is a little bit better than the category average of 20.4 MBps or the 20.9 MBps turned in by the Satellite L505.
The VAIO E took a brisk 1 minute và 5 seconds lớn transcode a 5-minute MPEG-4 tệp tin to AVI using Oxelon truyền thông media Converter. This is a bit faster than the Satellite L505"s 1 minute & 12 seconds. The category average is 52 seconds, but many of the systems that contributed toward that average have faster CPUs or four cores.
Graphics
Though it"s not marketed as a gaming system, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 card inside the VAIO E gives it a lot of graphics muscle. On 3DMark06, which measures overall graphics prowess, the VAIO E scored an impressive 4,112, way better than the 3,185 category average, miles ahead of the Satellite L505 with integrated graphics (1,743), và even better than the discrete graphics-powered hãng asus UL50VF (3436).
When we played World of Warcraft at 1024 x 768 resolution, the VAIO E managed a smooth-as-butter 60 frames per second, 15 frames better than the category average of 45 fps & nearly double that of the Satellite L505 (31 fps). The asus UL50VF, with its Nvidia graphics, also achieved 60 fps. When we bumped the resolution up khổng lồ 1366 x 768 with high detail, the E Series" frame rate dropped to lớn a still-playable 25 fps, on par with the category average of 26 fps, but far ahead of the Satellite L505 (10 fps). The hãng asus UL50VF managed 31 fps at this resolution.
The E Series can even handle Far Cry 2, a more demanding game than World of Warcraft. At 1024 x 768 resolution, the notebook achieved a strong frame rate of 47 fps, far better than the category average of 32 fps, the 11 fps offered by the Satellite L505, và the 22 fps provided by the asus UL50VF. At 1366 x 768 resolution, the frame rate dropped lớn an unplayable 18 fps, but that was still better than the category average of 17 fps.

Battery Life & Wi-Fi
With a 15.5-inch screen, powerful chip core i3 CPU, & discrete ATI graphics, we didn"t expect the VAIO E Series khổng lồ last very long on a charge. On the máy tính xách tay Battery Test, which involves continuous website surfing over Wi-Fi, the notebook lasted only 2 hours và 44 minutes. This is 45 minutes less than the category average of 3:29, và 23 minutes less than the Toshiba Satellite L505. The hãng asus UL50VF, which uses an Intel
Core 2 Duo CPU and Nvidia Optimus Technology, lasted a whopping 7 hours & 50 minutes.
The VAIO E"s 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi thẻ provided a strong transfer rate of 45.1 Mbps at a distance of 15 feet from the router, and 32.8 Mbps at a distance of 50 feet. These scores were similar khổng lồ those provided by the Satellite L505 (43.9 / 27.2 Mbps) và the hãng asus UL50VF (46.4 / 28.3 Mbps).

The Sony VAIO E starts at $699 with a base configuration that includes a 2.13-GHz Intel core i3-330M CPU, Windows 7 trang chủ Premium (64-bit), a 5,400-rpm, 320GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, hãng intel GMA HD integrated graphics, a Gunmetal đen chassis, và a DVD burner. When configuring your VAIO E, you can upgrade khổng lồ a faster 2.26-GHz vi xử lý core i3 or 2.4-GHz core i5 CPU. You can also move from Windows 7 home Premium (64-bit)to Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), choose between 320GB và 500GB hard drive options in either 7,200-rpm or 5,400-rpm speeds, and grab up to 8GB of RAM. For $50, you can move from Intel"s integrated graphics lớn ATI"s discrete solution.
If you want a màu sắc other than Gunmetal Black, you"ll find yourself paying a $50 premium. $70 upgrades you from a DVD burner to lớn a Blu-ray player, while $150 gets you a Blu-ray burner. Sony tells us that a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen configuration of the VAIO E will be available soon, but right now you"re stuck with the standard 1366 x 768 display, even if you"re playing high def Blu-ray discs.
Software and Warranty
Click to enlarge Sony includes its VAIO Care utility, which launches when you hit the pink Assist button above the keyboard. It gives you easy access to lớn Sony VAIO support, while including system tune-up utilities, a recovery/restore feature, và troubleshooting wizards for dozens of possible problems. The Smart
Wi Connection Utility is Sony"s wireless manager, but we didn"t see any benefit of using it over the built-in Windows Network & Sharing Center.
In addition to its utilities, Sony includes Arc
Soft Web
Cam Companion 3for shooting videos & stills with the webcam, Corel Win
DVD BD for playing Blu-ray discs, & Roxio Easy media Creator 10 LJfor burning discs.
The E Series comes standard with a one-year warranty và 24/7 toll-free support. See how Sony did in our Tech support Showdown.
Verdict
The Sony VAIO E provides a strong set of style, performance, và multimedia features, but it"s not for everyone. If you"re looking for the best possible multimedia system, you may want something with better sound. You also might want to hold out for the 1920 x 1080 screen configuration of the VAIO E. If graphics performance isn"t paramount, you should be fine with the base integrated graphics configuration, though you might want to look at Toshiba"s Satellite L505: both are available for $699. However, if you want a colorful centerpiece for your living room/office that the whole family can enjoy for gaming, work, and more, the VAIO E is a compelling choice.

The Sony Vaio E is a new series, yet another line in what"s become a massive and somewhat confusing collection of Sony laptops. The chief selling points for the Vaio E are its affordable pricing, multimedia features, và Intel chip core i3 và i5 processors, along with an aggressive color scheme. We"ve reviewed và generally liked many of Sony"s multimedia Vaios, especially recent ones, so we were eager lớn see what the E could địa chỉ cửa hàng to the equation.
With Intel"s new vi xử lý core i3 processor, the Vaio EB1JFX/B is an affordable big-screen laptop that does many things well without much sacrifice.
The Vaio E will be available in a variety of customizable configurations, but Sony is currently offering a set mã sản phẩm for preorder that has a core i3 processor, a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a DVD/CD burner. That preconfigured model, which is what we tested, is called the EB1JFX/B.
The E is large, clean, và boxy, offering up a big rectangular profile & an overall feel that"s solid in the base but slightly flexy in the lid. The Vaio E is a budget machine, slotted below the bộ vi xử lý core i7 Vaio F, intended for people who want a large-screen máy vi tính with enough speed to vị most tasks well, but without spending top dollar. Based on its set of features, power, & value, we"re inclined to lớn recommend it--although we"re keenly aware of how boxy a máy tính xách tay it is. At $799, it"s a solid package while not being particularly inspiring. You probably won"t regret buying one, but it"s not a machine you"re likely lớn boast about, either.

Sony"s laptops seem to lớn trend in two different directions: the ultracompact, and the very, very big. The Vaio E is certainly the latter, although not monstrously so: at nearly 6 pounds & with its long body, its bulk trends toward the side of desktop replacement, và might be a machine best left on the desk rather than taken on frequent trips. The Vaio E series comes in a number of bright and shockingly day-glow colors, including Iridescent Blue, Hibiscus Pink, and Caribbean Green, as well as the more mundane Lava Black, Gunmetal Black, & Coconut White. Our preproduction review unit came in an unavailable và unsexy matte silver, although the wide keyboard inside was clad in matte white, with the palm rest done up in a slightly sparkling shade of glossy Coconut White.
The raised chiclet keyboard, with a bonus number pad, extends completely edge to edge across the Vaio E"s bottom half. Previous midrange Vaios tended to lớn not have number pads, and though we"re glad for the inclusion, the left-shifting of the keyboard & touch pad meant our left hand was hanging off the edge a bit while typing. Still, the Vaio E has a fantastic keyboard that might be one of the best we"ve ever used. Also excellent is the recessed cảm biến pad, covered in a tactile textured surface that grips easily. It"s very similar to the cảm ứng pad we loved so much in the Vaio NW series, which the E series replaces. Three dedicated buttons above the keyboard launch an Assist help program, a web button for a fast instant-on web browser for when the Vaio E isn"t already booted into Windows 7, & a Vaio button that launches Sony"s truyền thông media Gallery software, a decent music/photo/video organizer & slideshow maker.
The big, bright, glossy 16x9-pixel LED display on the Vaio EB1JFX/B measures 15.5 inches across, and looks somehow even larger when it"s being used. The screen stretches across most of the upper lid with minimal bezel; its brightness and color unique was excellent to our eyes, & though the resolution at 1,366x768 pixels isn"t full 1080p HD, we were able to open documents và windows side-by-side for multitasking, & thought that the screen offered very good real estate. The Vaio EB1JFX/B also has some very loud speakers, which we greatly appreciated. With good bass & treble, the E surprised us with TV-quality stereo speakers that are perfect for movie watching and video sharing.

The Vaio E series has a kiến thiết that"s very similar to lớn the new high-end F series, & shares a number of its advantages in terms of ports: a generous four USB ports including its e
SATA combo, & an Express
Card/34 slot. Công nghệ bluetooth không dây is also included.
Our fixed-configuration EB1JFX/B can be expanded up to 8GB of RAM, but there is an option on Sony"s Vaio site lớn customize your own Vaio E--the price starts at $699, which includes a gunmetal đen case và the same core i3 processor we reviewed, with a slightly smaller hard drive. Sony charges a slightly absurd extra $50 for any other color option, plus $19.99 for an optional different-colored keyboard skin. The Vaio E series can be upgraded lớn a faster chip core i3 or a 2.4 GHz chip core i5 processor for an extra $50 or $100, respectively, & the options only continue from there, including the option to add a Blu-ray drive or Blu-ray burner for $70 or $150.
Though it may seem lớn a chip core i-series newcomer that a chip core i3 processor is a lesser CPU than a chip core i5, abandon all those thoughts now. It does run programs & our benchmark tests slower than Intel"s core i5 processor, but it"s a faster CPU overall than older vi xử lý core 2 Duo laptops. The difference between a bộ vi xử lý core i3 & Core i5, by comparison of the Vaio EB1JFX/B and the Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904, which costs $100 more, is notable, but the multitasking capabilities of the bộ vi xử lý core i3 are closer to bộ vi xử lý core i5 level than vi xử lý core 2 Duo level. Make sense? Basically, what we"re saying is the bộ vi xử lý core i3 is certainly no slouch. We ran a DVD, streamed video, and worked on this reviews all the same time on the EB1JFX/B, all with practically no problems.
Though the Vaio EB1JFX/B has no dedicated graphics, its Intel truyền thông Accelerator HD handles video playback perfectly well, and for anyone looking strictly for a media laptop, the Vaio E series is a strong consideration with its smooth video clip and large, bright screen. Casual games và Netbook-level games will still run fine--if you require a bit more muscle, Sony offers an option to showroom ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics for an extra $50. If you don"t need to lớn play advanced games or work on large graphics-intensive projects, however, the EB1JFX/B will be plenty of computer for your needs.
